The Mahi Blending Sessions
Join Brian Bicknell of Mahi Wines to learn more about the blending process of wine and how small changes make a big difference...
How it works
- Brian will give a brief overview of Marlborough as a region, looking at where Marlborough is and why the wines are so distinctive.
- This discussion considers why sub-regions are different, comparison of temperatures and growing seasons...
- We then taste through a selection of Mahi wines from tank or barrel and discuss some of the following themes:
- A comparison of two distinct vineyards
- A wild ferment versus an inoculated one
- A new barrel versus an older one
- Press wine versus free-run wine
-
Clones: Same vineyard, different clones
-
Stems: 100% whole cluster versus 100% de-stemmed, same fruit etc.etc.
4. We then split into teams of 3 or 4.
Each team gets a 100 ml measuring cylinder and have 15 minutes to make their best selection. These newly blended wines are then judged and discussed with the group. And there is a winner...
It's fun, educational and very informative.
